New year, new opportunities for growth.
Have you been encouraging your drivers to set New Year’s resolutions this month? Don’t forget to set some for yourself as well. Drivers aren’t the only ones who can benefit from setting goals at the beginning of a new year – you can too. One of the more common resolutions is “professional development,” or finding ways to improve your professional skills and become better at your role.
There are many opportunities out there for you, and it is important that you choose the opportunity that’s right for you. If you’re not sure which direction to take, ask yourself the following:
What area do you want to develop?
Are you looking to learn a new skill, improve upon existing skills, or acquire new knowledge? Is it industry specific, like learning the FMCSRs, or something more general like refreshing your communication skills or learning more about running a business?
What is reasonable and attainable for your current situation?
Do you have the time and resources to attend a seminar, conference, or in-person course? Are you able to get away from work or your home life for a few days, or would you benefit more from something remote and self-paced?
How do you learn best?
Are you a visual or an auditory learner? Do you learn through reading and writing? Or do you learn best with hands-on instruction? Consider this when determining what the best course of action is for you.
Development opportunities you may want to consider pursuing include:
- Online learning programs;
- Reading blogs, following the news, and watching webinars on topics related to your industry;
- Attending industry events; and/or
- Sitting in on driver training or even riding along with a driver to get a better sense of “a day in the life.”
When choosing goals, it is important to ensure that you choose something you will be able to successfully complete. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to further your development. Whatever form your development takes, the most important thing is that it works for you. Development opportunities require an investment in the form of your time, and often money, so you want to make sure you’ll get something out of it.
Key to remember: The new year is a great time to work on your personal and professional development.
