Don't forget about the lithium battery test summary
For those of you that deal with lithium batteries, the requirement to make the lithium battery test summary available is quickly approaching. Manufacturers and distributors must make the lithium battery test summary available by January 1, 2022.
Required information
The lithium battery test summary provides critical safety information about the battery. The test summary must include the following elements:
- Name of product manufacturer,
- Product manufacturer’s contact information,
- Name and contact information of test laboratory,
- A unique test report identification number,
- Date of test report,
- Description of cell or battery,
- List of tests conducted and results (i.e., pass/fail),
- Reference to the assembled battery or testing requirements, if applicable,
- Reference to the revised edition of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria used, and
- Signature with name and title of signatory as an indication of the validity of information provided.
Test summaries do not need to accompany lithium battery shipments, they just need to be made available. This can be done by posting it on a company website or by preparing a paper document.
The test summary requirement applies to all lithium batteries and cells manufactured on or after January 1, 2008, and includes equipment powered by those cells and batteries. Providing a testing summary will help lithium battery shippers gain confidence that the batteries they offer for transport have been manufactured and tested properly.
