Young adult CDL training program begins in New York
A driver who is between 18- and 20-years old and has a valid New York state-issued driver’s license is now able to qualify for a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) by completing the state’s CDL A Young Adult Training Program.
Under this program, the driver is restricted to intrastate operations and must complete:
- Entry-level driver training (ELDT) as mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA); and

Training should focus on basic vehicle control skills and the mastery of basic maneuvers including, but not limited to:
- Vehicle inspection,
- Backing,
- Parking,
- Coupling/uncoupling,
- Vehicle controls,
- Shifting,
- Extreme driving conditions, and
- Safe driver behavior.
