Transportation Monthly Round Up - February 2024
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has issued a proposed rulemaking that is intended to enhance flexibility of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) program. Proposed changes include:
- Expanding an applicant’s ability to take the CDL skills test in a state other than the applicant’s state of domicile;
- Eliminating the requirement that an applicant wait at least 14 days to take the CDL skills test following initial issuance of the commercial learner’s permit (CLP); and
- Requiring that third-party knowledge examiners be subject to the training, certification, record check standards, and auditing and monitoring requirements currently applicable to state knowledge examiners.
The FMCSA has issued a new rule that exempts certain providers of recreational activities from needing operating authority to operate 9- to 15-passenger vans (with or without a trailer) within a 150 air-mile radius of the passenger boarding location.
This will save time and resources for excursion companies that transport passengers for outdoor activities like rafting, biking, skiing, or hunting.
Roadcheck starts on May 14 and the CVSA has revealed its focus areas: alcohol & drug possession by the driver, and tractor protection systems, including anti-bleed-back valves, tractor protection valves, and trailer supply valves.
Roadcheck is a three-day commercial truck and bus inspection and inspectors will be performing as many Level I inspections as possible. Make sure your drivers and vehicles are prepared.
February 7th marked the two-year anniversary of the implementation of the entry-level driver training (ELDT) rule. Currently, there are just under 34,000 training providers listed on the ELDT Training Provider Registry (TPR). That’s an increase of 26 percent since this time last year.
Concerns about this increase in training providers has prompted the industry to ask the FMCSA to take steps to ensure all providers on the TPR are meeting the regulation’s requirements. It is expected that FMCSA will be taking steps in the near future to address these concerns.
That’s it for this month’s roundup. Stay safe, and thanks for watching.
