Canada requires vaccines for truckers at border
Beginning in January 2022, truck drivers must be fully vaccinated to enter Canada. The Public Health Agency of Canada recently announced the adjustment to COVID protocols that apply to essential workers crossing the border into Canada, including truck drivers.
The announcement provided details on two important dates:
- As of November 30, 2021, all truck drivers must use the ArriveCAN app to identify their vaccination status upon entry into Canada.
- Starting January 15, 2022, all truck drivers coming to Canada from the U.S. by land must be fully vaccinated to enter Canada.
A clarification from the agency notes that a Canadian truck driver who is not fully vaccinated can’t be denied entry into Canada. Canadian citizens, persons registered as Indians under the Indian Act, and permanent residents may enter Canada by right.
Beginning January 15, unvaccinated Canadian truck drivers entering Canada must meet requirements for pre-entry, arrival, and Day 8 testing, as well as quarantine requirements. Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated foreign national truck drivers coming to Canada from the U.S. by land will be directed back to the United States.
ArriveCAN is mandatory and free
The Canadian government is warning carriers and other travelers to be cautious of third party, fraudulent webpages and apps that may be posing as ArriveCAN and asking for payment. ArriveCAN is free and secure and is the official Government of Canada platform to provide your information when entering Canada.
Save your profile to streamline the process
ArriveCAN now includes a new “saved traveler” feature to assist travelers, including essential workers like truck drivers, in submitting their information. Users can create a profile that saves travel documents and proof of vaccination information in ArriveCAN for re-use on future trips. If you don’t use this feature, you’ll need to enter this information for each ArriveCAN submission.
ArriveCAN can be accessed:
- Via a downloaded app (be sure you have the most current version), or
- Online at arrivecan.cbsa-asfc.cloud-nuage.canada.ca.
Key to remember: Truck drivers going to Canada need to remember two dates: November 30, 2021, the day on which use of the ArriveCAN app became mandatory, and January 15, 2022, after which drivers must be COVID vaccinated to enter Canada.
