Is chocolate healthy?
I opened the email with trepidation. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) article promised to provide the truth about health claims related to chocolate, and I knew which way I wanted the research to lean.
A few pieces of dark chocolate have been my go-to dessert for years. When my birthday or another holiday rolls around, it’s easy for my family to guess what I’m hoping will be under the wrapping paper. Dark chocolate never disappoints.
Dark chocolate has a healthy reputation, so making it my dessert of choice provides a double dose of satisfaction. Not only am I enjoying a delicious treat, I’m actually doing myself a favor. Well, maybe not as much of a favor as I’d like to think.
The semi-sweet truth
The NIH points out that studies do suggest cocoa, an ingredient in chocolate, contains nutrients that could improve heart health and help with brain function.
But studies are looking at the health benefits of concentrated amounts of cocoa flavanols, the compounds thought to provide health benefits. These concentrates provide a much higher dose of cocoa flavanols than dark chocolate does.
In addition, the added sugar, cocoa butter, and calories that chocolate brings can’t be ignored. They move dark chocolate away from the healthy food category.
Satisfying the craving
However, there’s no reason not to make dark chocolate part of a balanced diet. Having it for supper is definitely a no-go. Having it for dessert, however, remains acceptable.
To make dark chocolate a smart part of your diet, the NIH provides these tips:
- Watch your total calories. Chocolate has a lot of calories, and gaining weight will wipe out any benefits you might get from the healthy compounds in chocolate.
- Eat as dark a chocolate as you can.
- Avoid white and milk chocolates. They contain little or no cocoa.
- Make hot chocolate with unsweetened cocoa, water or non-fat milk, and little added sugar.
To my relief, there’s no need to banish dark chocolate from my dessert list. That’s especially good news at this time of year. Mother’s Day is just around the corner and you know what’s already on my wish list.
