Expert Insights: Some gummies definitely not for kids
When I was a kid, my friends and I nibbled candy cigarettes and chewed bubble gum cigars. You or your employees might remember these treats as well.
Looking back, having kid-focused goodies modeled after these cancer-causing products is pretty horrifying. While these products have thankfully fallen out of favor, there are some goody-themed products on the market today that are even scarier for kids, and your employees should be aware of their dangers.
Gummies, brownies, snacks, lollipops, and other edibles have become popular as marijuana legalization has become more widespread. In addition, the legal gray area of Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has led to a proliferation of products containing this chemical, which is similar to the THC in marijuana that causes the high feeling.
The fact that these products are meant for adults doesn’t stop kids from mistaking them for regular candies and treats, however. It is virtually impossible for a child to tell whether a product is laced with marijuana when it looks like candy, especially when it is in a brightly colored package.
This mistake could have severe consequences, however. When children eat marijuana products intended for adults they are at risk for severe health effects and even death.
A normal dose of cannabis in a gummy intended for an adult could be toxic to a child. To keep kids safe, adults need to take action if they use edibles containing any form of THC. They must:
- Store edibles in a secure or locked location.
- Keep edibles out of sight and out of reach of children.
- Limit the number of edibles in the home at one time.
- Understand the THC concentration of the edibles.
Edibles can be dangerous for adults as well, as it takes longer for the effects of the drug to be felt. As a result, people may consume more than they should. In addition, because of the way they are manufactured, they could contain harmful chemicals.
Information about these dangers can be shared with your employees during a team huddle, through intranet articles, or as part of a department meeting. Even if your workplace does not allow employees to use marijuana, your workers might have friends or family members who do use gummies. The message can be tied to the importance of safety at home.
Like candy cigarettes, these edibles look harmless but can be deceptively dangerous. Although they’re modeled after goodies, adults need to be get the message that they need to be used cautiously and are not child’s play.
