EPA celebrates 30 years of climate partnership programs
EPA’s first voluntary climate initiative, Green Lights, was founded in 1991 and provided tools and resources to help facility owners and managers take better advantage of more energy-efficient commercial lighting options. To mark the 30th anniversary of the occasion, EPA is highlighting the impacts and successes of its many climate partnership programs launched since that time.
Among the programs showcased in the EPA’s celebration are:
- ENERGY STAR®, launched in 1992 and now a leading symbol of energy efficiency. EPA notes that 40%of Fortune 500 companies partner with the program.
- The Green Power Partnership, which provides information, technical assistance, and recognition to organizations that voluntarily participate in the green power market.
- EPA’s Center for Corporate Climate Leadership, which provides guidance for measuring and managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, setting targets for reduction, and implementing strategies for the supply chain.
EPA touts both the environmental and economic impacts of these initiatives, and the agency estimates that its climate partnership programs have prevented the release of more than 6 billion metric tons of GHG emissions while also helping consumers and businesses in the United States save more than $500 billion.
