DataQs security shift: Don’t let access slip away!
First the Portal, now DataQs. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is warning that users of its data-correction site could soon lose access if they don’t take action.
As part of a larger effort to make government websites more secure, the FMCSA is required to add two-factor authentication to the DataQs site by the end of the year. This new login method, also being added to the agency’s Portal site, requires users to provide two pieces of information to verify their identity.
The change means that motor carriers, drivers, and other users will need to access DataQs through a Login.gov account. The FMCSA warns that users could start losing access after December 20, 2023.
What is DataQs?
DataQs is an online system that allows users to challenge or correct data the FMCSA has on file about them, such as violations or crashes. It also allows users to request copies of roadside inspection reports and challenge the preventability of certain types of commercial vehicle crashes.
DataQs is available at dataqs.fmcsa.dot.gov.
What do you need to do?
The actions you need to take in the next few weeks depend on how you currently log in to DataQs.
If you log in using a DataQs username and password:
- Make sure the email address you have in your DataQs profile is accurate and that it’s unique to an individual user. Going forward, you will not be able to use a shared email address in your DataQs profile.
- If you haven’t already, set up a Login.gov account, preferably by December 20, 2023, using that same email address. A link to instructions for doing so is available on the home page of the FMCSA website.
Note that if you have multiple DataQs profiles tied to the same email address, you’ll be able to log in to Login.gov to view those accounts.
If you log in using your Portal user ID and password:
- Log in to the Portal website, at portal.fmcsa.dot.gov. The Portal is also moving to multifactor authentication through Login.gov, so you should have already received instructions about setting up a Login.gov account to maintain access to the Portal.
- Select DataQs from your list of available FMCSA systems.
The FMCSA says motor carriers are “strongly encouraged” to go through their Portal account to log in to DataQs, because that allows them to access all requests for data review associated with their U.S. DOT number(s).
Key to remember: The FMCSA says DataQs users may soon lose access if they don’t take action by December 20, 2023, to tie their account to a more secure Login.gov account.
