The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) does not currently require employers to have safety committees. However, some states do have separate requirements for safety committees. These state requirements often target specific high-risk industries, employers with a certain number of employees, and/or employers with poor safety records.
Many states that require safety committees under state law do so under workers’ compensation statutes. States that do not require employers to establish a safety committee may offer incentives, such as a workers’ compensation insurance premium reduction, for employers who voluntarily establish such programs. Check with your workers’ compensation carrier for more details on whether this applies in your state.
