OSHA does not have a federal standard that requires employees to complete its 10-hour and 30-hour safety training courses. They are part of OSHA’s voluntary outreach training program. However, some states, as well as many private construction or service contractors, require that employees complete a 10- or 30-hour OSHA safety training course before they are allowed to work on site. It is up to the individual company to decide to include such a requirement in the contract.
The 10-hour course provides basic awareness training on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of workplace hazards. The 30-hour course provides more in-depth training appropriate for lead or supervisory positions.
Some states may have requirements for 10-hour and 30-hour OSHA training. Use the chart below to determine if additional requirements apply to your operations. Please note: Even in cases where there is no statewide requirement for 10-hour/30-hour OSHA training, some municipalities might have their own requirements. Be sure to check your local laws and regulations to ensure compliance.
