The state of California has adopted unique standards for 10-hour and 30-hour OSHA safety training that apply to certain entertainment vendors at public venues. A summary of the requirements is as follows:
“Entertainment event vendors” are private employers and subcontracted employers that contract to set up, operate, or tear down live events at a public events venue. Such vendors must verify that their employees:
- Have completed the Cal/OSHA-10, the OSHA-10/General Entertainment Safety training, or the OSHA-10, as appropriate to their occupation;
- Have completed the Cal/OSHA-30, the OSHA-30/General Entertainment Safety training, or the OSHA-30, if they are in a lead or head of department role; OR that the entertainment vendor can certify that its employees/subcontractors meet the conditions for a skilled and trained workforce.
The entertainment events vendor must certify in writing that it has verified the training completion requirements for all employees/subcontractors and include the names of such employees along with which training each employee has completed.
“Public events venue” includes a state-operated fairground, county fairground, state park, California State University, the University of California, or auxiliary organization-run facility that operates live events.
California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has its own versions of the OSHA 10-hour and 30-hour training that cover the same topics as the federal OSHA programs along with some state-specific additions.
