On June 15, 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security announced that certain young people who came to the United States illegally are allowed to stay in the country and apply for temporary work authorization. This program, called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), issues qualifying individuals an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
As the result of court decisions, existing DACA recipients retain their grant of DACA and are allowed to apply for (and receive) renewal, but the government cannot grant new DACA applications. Current grants of DACA and related Employment Authorization Documents remain valid until they expire, unless individually terminated.
