This standard provides guidance to determine the flash point of liquids within certain viscosity and flashpoint characteristics.

29 CFR 1910.106(a)(14)(i)Employers must use one of the following methods to determine flashpoint of a flammable liquid: For a liquid which has a viscosity of less than 45 SUS at 100°F (37.8°C), does not contain suspended solids, and does not have a tendency to form a surface film while under test, use the procedure specified in the Standard Method of Test for Flashpoint by Tag Closed Tester (ASTM D–56–70), or an equivalent test method as defined in Appendix B to §1910.1200—Physical Hazard Criteria.ASTM D56-70 Test for Flash Point by Tag Closed Tester.
29 CFR 1910.1200 Appendix B.6.3The flash point shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D56-05, ASTM D3278, ASTM D3828, ASTM D93-08, or any other method specified in GHS Revision 3, Chapter 2.6. The initial boiling point shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D86-07a or ASTM D1078.ASTM D56-05 Standard Test Method for Flash Point by Tag Closed Cup Tester.
29 CFR 1926.155(i)(1)Employers must ensure the flashpoint of liquids having a viscosity less than 45 Saybolt Universal Second(s) at 100°F (37.8°C) and a flashpoint below 175°F (79.4°C) is determined in accordance with the Standard Method of Test for Flash Point by the Tag Closed Tester, ASTM D-56-69, or an equivalent method as defined by §1910.1200 appendix B.ASTM D56-69 Standard Method of Test for Flash Point by the Tag Closed Tester.
