Unprogrammed inspections
['Enforcement and Audits - OSHA']

OSHA says unprogrammed inspections will comprise 70 to 80 percent of all inspections. Inspections scheduled in response to alleged hazardous working conditions identified at a specific worksite are classified as unprogrammed. This type of inspection responds to:
- Imminent dangers,
- Fatalities or catastrophes (three or more hospitalizations), and
- Complaints or referrals.
Unprogrammed inspections may also be conducted as follow-ups of previously conducted inspections.
Note: In some cases, instead of an inspection, OSHA may contact an employer to inquire about alleged hazards reported in a complaint or referral. Publication OSHA 4498, "Responding to OSHA Inquiries on Complaints and Referrals: Best Practices for Small Employers," goes over the inquiry process and six tips employers can use to handle the situation.
