Every employee who needs to be protected from a work-related hazardous atmosphere must be provided with respiratory protection to prevent inhaling the atmospheric contamination. If the workplace has areas/jobs where the air contaminants are above the permissible exposure limits (PELs), the employer is required to provide respirators to employees who work in those areas. All respirator wearers must be fit-tested, medically evaluated, and trained in the proper use of the equipment, how to wear it, clean it, inspect and care for it. The complete training requirements can be found at 1910.134(k).
