Section 1910.157(e)(3) discusses the annual “maintenance check.” This is a more complete inspection of the fire extinguisher and requires the technician to be approved/certified. Many employers often refer to it as the annual inspection and assume it is similar to the monthly “visual” inspections. It is not.
The annual “maintenance” check has to be done by an “approved” technician per NFPA. NFPA is recognized by OSHA in this instance. Approval is granted from the state or local Fire Marshal of your state/city.
So, contact your local/state Fire Marshall to find out how to get approved. Remember, “inspections” do not require certification, rather, only “maintenance” functions require a certified technician like the annual “maintenance check.” Is there a NFPA requirement that limits how close a light fixture can be to a fire sprinkler? NFPA 13D Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems Section 8.2.5.1.1 says pendent sprinklers shall be located at least 3 feet away from obstructions such as ceiling fans and light fixtures. Section 8.2.5.1.3 says where the sprinkler cannot be located 3 ft away from the obstruction, an additional sprinkler shall be located on the other side of the obstruction.
