The EMS framework consists of 27 steps that lead organizations through a four-part cycle of plan, do, check, and act. While environmental aspects and impacts are established in the “plan” part of the cycle, they affect all parts of the EMS cycle.
Plan
- Determine the environmental aspects and impacts and then, based on organization-specific criteria, designate the significant environmental aspects (those that have the most environmental impact).
- Set environmental objectives and develop an action plan that’s consistent with the environmental aspects and impacts.
- Identify operational controls and monitoring and measurement requirements. Operational controls manage aspects that result in detrimental environmental impacts. They can also handle aspects that result in beneficial environmental impacts. Additionally, establish monitoring and measurement activities based on the aspects, impacts, and objectives to measure the effectiveness of the action plan.
Do
- Train employees in EMS awareness, especially those who will interact with the significant environmental aspects.
- Provide specialized environmental training for employees who implement the operational controls and work toward the environmental objectives. Train employees to understand the aspects and impacts the controls and objectives address.
- Implement operational controls of aspects to minimize negative environmental impact and record the controls used for each aspect.
Check
- Monitor and measure environmental performance related to environmental aspects.
Act
- Take corrective action to address any nonconformances to the EMS and mitigate the resulting environmental impacts.
- Have top management review a summary report of EMS performance. The review should cover any changes in significant environmental aspects.
