If you’re new to the workers’ compensation (WC) arena, it may be difficult to find useful sources of information to assist you with auditing your program. Audits are generally used to identify areas where changes should be made to improve present injury management programs. These changes could present significant savings to your company. During an audit you will look at accident reporting procedures; health, safety, and loss prevention plans; return to work policies; and medical provider and attorney involvement.
Here are some resources that may be helpful:
- WC insurance company: Your insurance company can recommend ways to conduct audits and acquaint you with what’s involved. Be specific about your concerns. Request information about how to set up a program and detect problem areas. Emphasize that you need help with a WC program, NOT a safety program.
- State labor department: Several states publish workers’ compensation newsletters and provide other useful materials. You can find a list of many state WC websites at www.ic.nc.gov/ncic/pages/websites.htm.
- Networking: Attending WC seminars and conventions or getting involved with local and state safety and WC activities will increase your networking opportunities. Also, contact WC departments of companies in your area; they may already have developed audit procedures to help you.
- Outside agencies: If your company is serious about conducting a WC audit, you may want to consider hiring an outside consultant to review your program. Although it may be expensive, if serious changes need to be made to your program, an outside agency may be necessary. Sometimes top management will listen to advice given by an outside firm as opposed to recommendations by department managers.
