If the employer is new to the WC arena, it may be difficult to find useful sources of information to assist with auditing the program. Audits are generally used to identify areas where changes should be made to improve current injury management programs.
These changes could present significant savings to the company. During an audit, the employer will look at accident reporting procedures; health, safety, and loss prevention plans; return to work policies; and medical provider and attorney involvement.
Here are some resources that may be helpful when conducting a WC audit:
WC insurance company: The insurance company can recommend ways to conduct audits and acquaint employers with what’s involved. Be specific about any concerns. Request information about how to set up a program and detect problem areas. Emphasize that help is needed with a WC program, NOT a safety program.
State labor department: Several states publish workers’ compensation newsletters and provide other useful materials.
Networking: Attending WC seminars and conventions or getting involved with local and state safety and WC activities will increase networking opportunities. Also, contact WC departments of companies in the area; they may already have developed audit procedures that can help.
Outside agencies: If the employer company is serious about conducting a WC audit, they may want to consider hiring an outside consultant to review the program. Although it may be expensive, if serious changes need to be made to the program, an outside agency may be necessary. Sometimes top management will listen to advice given by an outside firm as opposed to recommendations by a department manager.
