The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations require drivers who are hauling hazardous materials to check their tires at the beginning of each trip and each time the vehicle is parked. This requirement only applies to motor vehicles engaged in the transportation of hazardous materials which must be marked or placarded.
If the driver discovers a tire that is flat, leaking, or improperly inflated, the driver must proceed to the nearest safe location where repairs can be made. If the driver discovers a tire that is overheated, the driver must immediately cause the tire to be removed from the vehicle and the driver cannot operate the vehicle until the cause of the overheating has been corrected.
