Recommended PPE for working with heated asphalt includes respiratory protection to keep asphalt fume exposure below the NIOSH recommended exposure limit of 5 mg/m3. Additional PPE includes thermal insulated gloves with extended gauntlets, long sleeve shirt with closed collar and buttoned cuffs, long pants with no cuffs , and safety boots with six inch leather uppers. Hard hats must be worn where overhead hazards exist. Goggles or safety glasses with side shields. And high-visibility clothing must be worn in congested or high-traffic work areas.
