There are currently no specific OSHA regulations for waste anesthetic gas exposure. However, some OSHA regulations address protective measures for workers with exposures to harmful gases. These include the Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134).and Hazard Communication standard (29 CFR 1910.1200). The employer must keep certain records under the Access to Employee Exposure and Medical Records Standard (29 CFR 1910.1020).
Also see the OSHA letter of interpretation dated September 24, 1984, entitled, “Hazards of Exposure to Waste Anesthetic Gases, Particularly Fluothane.” Also see the March 1977 NIOSH publication number 77-140 entitled, “Criteria for a Recommended Standard: Occupational Exposure to Waste Anesthetic Gases and Vapors.”
