What is the role of the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS)?
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) regulates the safety of meat, poultry, catfish, and processed egg products (liquid, frozen, or dried) and ensures they’re properly labeled and packaged. FSIS provides onsite inspection in all federally regulated slaughter and processing facilities.
FSIS’s mission also includes:
- Verifying humane handling at slaughter
- Conducting sampling/testing (pathogens, residues)
- Enforcing recalls
- Investigating foodborne illness outbreaks involving FSIS-regulated products
