OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard at 29 CFR 1910.1200 offers the HNOC classification. The agency does not require label elements for HNOCs, such as pictograms, hazard statements, or precautionary statements. HNOC may be included as supplemental information. However, 1910.1200 Appendix C indicates the exclamation mark pictogram is appropriate (but non-mandatory) for labeling containers of HNOC.
If the exclamation mark pictogram is used for that classification, the label must also indicate below the pictogram the letters “HNOC” or the words “Hazard Not Otherwise Classified.” Other hazard classes on the label do not require the name of the class below their respective pictograms. The exclamation mark pictogram may appear only once on a label. If the exclamation mark pictogram already appears as a required pictogram for some other hazard, it may not appear a second time as supplemental information for the HNOC.
While OSHA does not require labeling for HNOC hazards, Health Canada requires a pictogram, signal word, hazard statements, and precautionary statements for HNOCs.
