At 1910.252(a)(1)(i), OSHA says that “If the object to be welded or cut cannot readily be moved, all movable fire hazards in the vicinity shall be taken to a safe place.” The standard also says that a “fire watch” is required whenever welding or cutting is performed in locations where combustible materials are “closer than 35 feet (10.7m) to the point of operation.” As such, 35 feet seems to be the distance that OSHA would consider “safe.”
