While there is no federal regulation under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that explicitly prohibits a person from carrying a firearm in a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), several states impose additional restrictions on vehicle carry (including concealed carry) that can apply to CMV drivers.

Under FOPA’s “safe passage” clause, firearms owners are permitted to transport firearms across state lines as long as the weapon is a) unloaded; b) not readily accessible (e.g., stored in a trunk or locked container); and c) legal to possess in both the starting and ending locations.
