The Labor Law Department of the Texas Workforce Commission administers the following two programs: the Texas Pay Day Law, and the Texas Child Labor Law. The Department also disseminates information on the Texas Minimum Wage Act.
State Child Labor Laws: With some exemptions, minors must be at least 14 years of age to be employed in the state of Texas. Texas law prohibits minors under the age of 18 from working in some occupations and limits working hours for persons under the age of 16. When both federal and state laws apply, the law setting the more stringent standard must be observed.
The Texas Child Labor Law can be found at Chapter 51 of the Texas Labor Code:
Texas child labor rules can be found at Title 40, Part 20, Chapter 817 of the Texas Administrative Code
State Minimum Wage: The minimum wage for Texas is $7.25 per hour, and follows the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
The Texas Minimum Wage Law can be found at Chapter 62 of the Texas Labor Code
State Prevailing Wage: No threshold amount for contract coverage has been set under the state prevailing wage law.
The Prevailing Wage Law can be found at Title 10, Subtitle F, Chapter 2258 of the Texas Government Code
