State Child Labor Laws: With some exemptions, minors must be at least 14 years of age to be employed in the state of Nevada. Nevada law prohibits work in some occupations and limits working hours for persons under the age of 16. In addition to prohibited hazardous occupations, there are specific restrictions regarding employment in casinos, businesses which sell alcoholic beverages, and immoral businesses. Nevada also has limitations on employing minors under the age of 18 as messengers.
Nevada rules on employment of minors can be found at Chapter 609 of the Nevada Revised Statutes
State Minimum Wage: Nevada has a two-tiered minimum wage. Effective July 1, 2010, the first tier is $7.25 per hour for employers who provide qualified health insurance benefits. The second tier is $8.25 per hour for employers who do not provide qualified health benefits. These rates may be adjusted annually on July 1 to include increases in the federal minimum wage and a yearly cost of living adjustment. However, they have not changed since 2010 and will remain in effect after July 1, 2015.
Qualified health benefits means health insurance that covers the employee and the employee's dependents. The employee's share of the premium cost cannot exceed 10 percent of the employee's gross taxable income.
Overtime: Generally, Nevada employers must pay 11/2 times an employee's regular wage rate whenever an employee works more than 40 hours in any scheduled workweek or more than 8 hours in any workday. By mutual employer/employee agreement, a scheduled 10-hour day for 4 days a week may be worked without premium pay after 8 hours. There are a number of exemptions to this rule and federal wage and hour rules may apply.
State rules on minimum wage and overtime can be found in Chapter 608, Compensation, Wages and Hours, Nevada Revised Statutes
State Prevailing Wage: The Nevada labor Commissioner conducts an annual survey of contractors to establish a prevailing wage in each county. The rates for each county are available at: http://labor.nv.gov/PrevailingWage/Public_Works/Prevailing_Wages/
The rules for determining the prevailing wages for Nevada public works projects are found at Chapter 338, Section 30 of the Nevada Revised Statutes
