A vehicle is required to have a title within Maine if it is a 1995 model year or newer. Titles are issued for the following types of vehicles:
- All motor vehicles except special mobile equipment,
- Trailers with an unladen weight exceeding 3,000 pounds, and
- Motorcycles with engines 300 CC and over.
An application for a Maine certificate of title can be obtained by contacting the Title Unit in Augusta or by visiting any of the motor vehicle branch office locations. The application must be completed, signed by the owner, and mailed with the appropriate fee to the Title Unit in Augusta or taken to a branch office location. The previous title or certificate of origin must accompany the application.
Vehicle owners must also submit the following documentation:
- The current vehicle title or the manufacturer's certificate of origin;
- Payment for all applicable titling and record fees;
- Proof of lien release (Form MVT-12), if applicable;
- Odometer information (Form MVT-31), if applicable; and
- Proof of completing a vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection, if applicable.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle, title, and/or registration may be subject to sales and use tax;
- There is an option to pay a $10 rush fee to receive an expedited title; and
- VIN inspections are only required for vehicles brought in from another country.
