To obtain a new or used car title within Indiana, vehicle owners must submit an application along with the following supporting documentation:
- The certificate or car title or manufacturer's certificate of origin;
- An odometer disclosure statement (Form 43230), if applicable;
- A physical inspection of a vehicle (Form 39530), if applicable;
- Proof of paying sales tax;
- Proof of address, including a driver's license or identification card;
- Proof of the applicant's social security number or federal identification number; and
- An affidavit (Form 37964) or notarized lien release letter, if applicable.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to sales and use tax,
- The vehicle must be titled before it can be registered,
- Indiana offers an expedited title for a $25 fee, and
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections are required for vehicles with a current out-of-state title.
Agency: Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Indiana, including a $15 fee to issue, duplicate, or replace a title.
