Most vehicles, mobile homes, or vessels are required to be titled within Florida, with the exception of mopeds, motorized bicycles, and trailers weighing less than 2,000 pounds. You must apply for a title in your name when you purchase a vehicle, mobile home, or vessel; bring a vehicle, mobile home, or vessel into Florida from another state or country; or if the ownership of a vehicle, mobile home, or vessel changes.
To obtain a certificate of title you must, at minimum, have the following:
- Proof of identification, including a driver license or identification card from any state, or a passport;
- Proof of ownership in the form of a manufacturer's certificate or origin or out-of-state title;
- A completed application for certificate of title with/without registration (HSMV form 82040); and
- Fees for sales tax and title.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to sales and use tax;
- Credit is allowed for sales tax paid to other states; and
- A vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection is required for used vehicles with out-of-state titles, as well as out-of-state trailers weighing more than 2,000 pounds.
Agency: Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Florida, including an original new title fee of $77.25.
