To title your vehicle within Colorado, take the required documents below to your county motor vehicle office. you'll need to pay the vehicle title fees, registration fees, and any applicable sales tax.
- Proof of insurance (if registering the vehicle at the same time),
- Secure and verifiable identification,
- The current title or other ownership documents properly endorsed by the previous owner,
- Odometer disclosure, and
- A bill of sale for sales tax purposes.
Additionally, if a lien is to be recorded, an acceptable mortgage document (security agreement) must be provided. The mortgage document must be an original, carbon copy, or a certified copy and must contain vehicle description, including year, make, vehicle identification number (VIN), lienholder's name and address, lien amount, and owner's signature.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to state sales and use tax;
- Nonresidents are exempt from any sales and use tax imposed if the vehicle is to be registered in the buyers state of residence;
- VIN inspections are required for new vehicles being registered for the first time — whether purchased in state or out-of-state — as well as whenever a new or used car is transferred to the state; and
- A vehicle must be titled within the state to be registered within Colorado.
