When completing an Alabama car title application, car owners must provide the designated agent with the following information:
- The vehicle identification number (VIN);
- The date of the vehicle's purchase, and whether the vehicle is new or used;
- The color of the vehicle, as well as the vehicle's year, make, and model;
- The vehicle's odometer reading;
- The vehicle's current title number (if applicable);
- Applicant information, including the applicant's name and address; and
- Lienholder information (if applicable), including the name and address of the lienholder(s).
To obtain a car title, vehicle owners must provide the agent with the following information:
- The vehicle's previous certificate of title or the manufacturer's certificate of origin;
- The vehicle's outstanding registration documents, if the buyer purchases the vehicle in a jurisdiction that does not require titles; and
- Additional documentation if the agent can't determine whether the vehicle meets anti-theft, emissions, and safety regulations.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle title is subject to Alabama sales tax if the title fee wasn't clearly labeled and separately stated from the dealer fees.
- Credit is allowed for sales and use tax paid in another jurisdiction.
- A VIN inspection is required for first time registrations.
- Out-of-state vehicles and vehicles that don't require a title must have a VIN/Ownership Documentation inspection prior to registration.
- An Alabama title and insurance must be obtained prior to vehicle registration.
- The title can be filed electronically.
