Vehicle registration

The Yukon Territory is not a member of the Canadian Agreement on Vehicle Registration (CAVR) or the International Registration Plan (IRP).

All motor vehicles must be licensed and registered prior to operating in the Yukon Territory.

Any vehicle which operates intraprovincially or is based in the Yukon must be registered, receive a certificate of registration and numbered licence plates from the Registrar of Motor Vehicles. Every application for registration must be accompanied by a motor vehicle liability insurance card given the owner by an insurance company to prove adequate vehicle coverage.

A staggered registration system has been implemented to spread vehicle registration over a twelve-month period.

A particular month is allotted to each letter of the alphabet. The first letter of a person’s surname or a company’s first name determines the month of vehicle registration:

An owner may register or renew registration for a vehicle for a period of between three months and 15 months if the vehicle weighs less than 4,500 kilograms, or for a period of between six months and 18 months if the vehicle weighs 4,500 kilograms or more.

Registration may be renewed beginning with the three months before the month of renewal, and ending with the last day of the month of renewal.

Validation tabs or plates will be issued. When a validation tab is issued it should be attached to the licence plate as follows:

if it is a month tab, the lower left corner of the plate;
if it is a year tab, the lower right corner of the plate.

Scale of fees: The following fees are payable for each month of the registration period.
