Any motor vehicle, mobile home, trailer, or semitrailer driven on Maine roadways must be registered. Registration and plates may be obtained by visiting any of the Motor Vehicle Branch Offices, or by mailing your application and the correct fee to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Augusta.
The registration fee for a passenger vehicle is $35. A registration remains valid for one year from the month it is issued. The fee for pick up trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 6,000 pounds is also $35. The registration fee for larger trucks increases with the registered gross weight.
A commercial (or farm) registration plate is required if your vehicle is a truck to which the gross vehicle weight will exceed 6,000 pounds. A truck is defined as a motor vehicle designed primarily to carry property. A truck may also draw trailers and semitrailers.
A truck in excess of 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight must be registered for the maximum weight of the truck and any load to be carried. If towing a trailer and the truck and trailer together exceed 8,000 ponds, the truck must be registered for the combined weight of the truck, trailer, and load.
Agency: Bureau of Motor Vehicles; see Regulatory Agencies for address(es).
License plate display
A registration plate must be displayed horizontally. Only one set of Maine registration plates may be displayed on one vehicle. A registration plate must be attached to the front and the rear of each vehicle except as follows:
- A trailer and semitrailer registration plate may be attached only to the rear of the vehicle.
- A motorcycle registration plate may not be attached to the front of the vehicle.
- A manufacturer, dealer, or transporter registration plate may be attached only to the rear of the vehicle.
- A truck tractor registration plate may be attached only to the front of that truck tractor.
International Registration Plan
Maine is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). The IRP is a base state system for vehicle registration allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
Qualified motor vehicles from another IRP jurisdiction must have Maine on the cab card or have a valid Maine IRP trip permit prior to entering Maine. Vehicles from non-IRP jurisdictions may operate into or through Maine in interstate commerce only. Non-apportioned vehicles operating intrastate must register in Maine or obtain trip permits. Motor vehicles that qualify for apportionment consist of the following:
- A power unit having two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or registered weight in excess of 26,000 pounds;
- A power unit having three or more axles, regardless of weight; or
- A unit used in combination when the weight of such combination exceeds a GVW or 26,000 pounds.
Temporary permit: A 72 consecutive hour IRP trip permit is available for $25 plus a $3 fax fee. A 72 consecutive hour combination IRP/IFTA trip permit is available for $75 plus a $3 fax fee.
The IRP Office will also issue a temporary vehicle registration (TVR), also known as a temporary authority (T/A), as evidence of temporary apportioned registration. A TVR is valid for up to 45 days.
Hunter's or unladen weight permit: Maine owner-operators, not registering in their own name, and not under contract to a lessee motor carrier may obtain a 30 day unladen weight permit. The permit allows for the operation of an unloaded power unit and trailer in any member jurisdiction. Proof of insurance must be provided before a permit will be issued.
Agency: Department of the Secretary of State, Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Fees: IRP fees will vary.
