All motor vehicles, motorized bicycles, trailers, and semitrailers intended to be operated upon any Kansas highway must be registered.
Any truck or truck tractor which is registered in another state and engaged in intrastate movements within Kansas must be registered within Kansas, except those exempt by law.
Any truck or truck tractor for which the owner has declared the maximum gross weight to exceed 12,000 pounds must durably mark on both sides of the vehicle, in plain letters at least two inches in height and at least 1/4 of an inch in stroke, the gross weight for which the vehicle is licensed, and the name and address of the owner or lessee.
Commercial motor vehicle operators are required to register for intrastate or interstate motor carrier cards depending on whether their business includes travel within Kansas or over multiple states.
Agency: Department of Revenue; see Regulatory Agencies for address(es).
License plate display
Kansas issues one license plate to be displayed at the rear of the vehicle; however, truck tractors must display the plate in the front of the vehicle.
International Registration Plan
Kansas is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). The IRP is a base state system for vehicle registration fees allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
Motor vehicles that qualify for apportionment consist of the following:
- A power unit having two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or registered weight in excess of 26,000 pounds;
- A power unit having three or more axles, regardless of weight; or
- A unit used in combination when the weight of such combination exceeds a GVW or 26,000 pounds.
To register your vehicles with the IRP in Kansas, you must:
- Determine the type of operation,
- Submit a Kansas apportioned registration application and a schedule C along with all required paperwork,
- Provide proof of heavy vehicle use tax filing with the IRS (if applicable), and
- Return the invoice and submit the appropriate fees.
Temporary permit: A 30-day temporary registration may be used in lieu of your permanent cab card and registration plate when you are adding or transferring a vehicle, adding a jurisdiction, increasing a registered weight, or requesting a replacement credential. A temporary registration may be faxed. When a temporary registration is issued, all of the required documentation must be provided and the billing invoice must be paid within the 30-day period.
Additionally, carriers registering with the IRP for the first time may be issued a 60-day temporary registration once all required paperwork has been received. The permit gives the carriers time to pay the supplement and get the credentials on the vehicle.
Agency: Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles.
Fees: Registration fees are determined by the type of operation (private, for-hire, or rental), as well as by the percentage of miles traveled in each member jurisdiction, the registered gross weight of each vehicle, and the number of vehicles in the carrier's fleet.
Other
Local truck registration
A truck or truck tractor registered for a gross weight of more than 12,000 pounds, operated wholly within the corporate limits of a city or village or within a radius of 25 miles beyond the corporate limits, may be classified as a local truck. Vehicles registered as local trucks or truck tractors may not be operated as contract or common carriers outside a radius of three miles beyond the corporate limits of the city or village in which the vehicle was based when registered and licensed.
