Intrastate
Washington has adopted Sec. 390.21 of the Federal Regulations for intrastate carriers.
Owners of the following intrastate commercial motor vehicles are required to have and display their DOT number on their vehicle:
- Commercial motor vehicles with a GVWR of 16,001 lbs. or more;
- A combination of commercial motor vehicles with a GVWR of 16,001 lbs. or more inclusive of a towed unit;
- A commercial motor vehicle of any size used in the transportation of hazardous materials;
- Commercial motor vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver; or
- A private school bus regardless of weight or size.
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR):
- For a single vehicle, the value specified by the vehicle manufacturer as the maximum loaded weight of the vehicle.
- For a combination of vehicles, the value specified by the vehicle manufacturer as the maximum loaded weight of the towing unit plus the GVWR of the towed unit or units.
Farm vehicles: Motor vehicles owned and operated by farmers in the intrastate transportation of their own farm, orchard, or dairy products, including livestock and plant or animal waste, from point of production to market or disposal are required to have and display an intrastate DOT number. These vehicles are exempt from safety audits and compliance reviews.
Note: Carriers already operating in interstate commerce and with a US DOT number do not have to apply for another US DOT number for Washington intrastate operation.
Intrastate for-hire vehicles: The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission requires all intrastate for-hire (common and contract) motor vehicles to have an intrastate authority permit number displayed on each side of the power unit. Carriers may display their USDOT number instead of the Utilities and Transportation Commission authority number.
Interstate
All commercial motor carriers (for-hire and private) operating interstate are subject to the marking requirements of 49 CFR 390.21 which requires all CMVs to display, on both sides of the power unit, the US DOT number and the legal name of the business entity that owns or controls the motor carrier operation, or the “doing business as” (DBA) name, as it appears on the Form MCS-150.
Any new or used commercial vehicles added to a motor carrier’s fleet must be identified with the US DOT number and single trade name before being put into service. The regulations do not require the MC number or city/state to be displayed on the vehicle.
