Maryland has not adopted Sec. 390.21 of the Federal Regulations.
When operating intrastate in Maryland, trucks registered over 10,000 pounds, truck-tractors, and buses must display the company or trade name along with a U.S. DOT number, a Maryland issued DOT number, or the number issued by a Maryland agency on both sides of the vehicle.
All Maryland intrastate Motor Carriers are required to display a Maryland DOT number except:
*The term “commercial paper,” for the purposes of vehicle identification, means, “money market security issued by large banks and corporations.” Commercial paper does not include transporting newspapers, stationery, etc.
A new motor carrier must file a Motor Carrier Identification Report (Form MCIR-150) with Maryland before beginning intrastate operations in Maryland. If you are a hazardous materials shipper, but not a motor carrier, you are not required to file Form MCIR-150 or obtain a Maryland DOT number.
Maryland specific intrastate USDOT Numbers can be obtained free of charge by filing an application with the Maryland State Highway Administration, Motor Carrier Division (SHA/MCD). Applications are available at all Maryland Truck Weigh and Inspection Stations (TWIS), or can be obtained on line at the SHA website: http://www.roads.maryland.gov/Index.aspx?PageId=544
Carriers must update the information on the Form MCIR-150 every 2 years. Motor carriers with a Maryland motor carrier identification number that later wish to begin interstate operations must have their number converted to a US DOT number.
All commercial motor carriers (for-hire and private) operating interstate are subject to the marking requirements of 49 CFR 390.21 which requires all CMVs to display, on both sides of the power unit, the US DOT number and the legal name of the business entity that owns or controls the motor carrier operation, or the “doing business as” (DBA) name, as it appears on the Form MCS-150.
Any new or used commercial vehicles added to a motor carrier’s fleet must be identified with the US DOT number and single trade name before being put into service.
The regulations do not require the MC Number or city/state to be displayed on the vehicle.
