Idaho has adopted (by reference) Sec. 390.21 of the Federal Regulations.
Commercial vehicles conducting intrastate operations solely within the state of Idaho with a GVWR of 26,001 or greater, or which transport more than 8 passengers, or haul hazardous materials requiring placards, are required to have an assigned DOT number.
Carriers who are 26,000 GVWR or less and operate only within the state of Idaho are no longer required to have an intrastate DOT number. (Carriers 10,001 to 26,000 GVWR transporting hazardous materials that require placards and passenger carriers still need an interstate or intrastate DOT number.)
Carriers that operate only in the state of Idaho are considered intrastate carriers. Commercial vehicle carriers that operate in and/or outside the state of Idaho are interstate carriers.
Each intrastate vehicle required to comply in Idaho must display, in a conspicuous place on both sides of each self-powered vehicle, in letters at least two (2) inches high the name or trade name of the motor carrier operating the vehicle, and a “US DOT” number.
The number must be displayed in the following form: US DOT #____.
Drive away vehicles must display a temporary identification (US DOT) number.
All commercial motor carriers operating interstate are subject to the marking requirements of 49 CFR 390.21 which requires all CMV’s to display, on both sides of the power unit, the US DOT number and the legal name of the business entity that owns or controls the motor carrier operation, or the “doing business as” (DBA) name, as it appears on the Form MCS-150.
Any new or used commercial vehicles added to a motor carrier’s fleet must be identified with the US DOT number and single trade name before being put into service.
The regulations do not require the MC number or city/state to be displayed on the vehicle.
