In this state all vehicles used upon the highways must be registered.
In Wyoming, commercial vehicle registration fees are a two part fee, either a county fee and a state fee, or a state fee and an equalized highway use fee, and is determined by the base location of the carrier, and whether the carrier holds Wyoming intrastate operating authority.
The registration period is the calendar year, January 1 thru December 31, with a grace period through March of the succeeding calendar year. The registration renewal period for commercial vehicles is annually between January 1 and March 31.
Credit is allowed on vehicles being deleted and may be applied on subsequent additions to the fleet during the current registration year. There is no provision for refund of any fees paid.
Motor vehicles must display one plate on the front and one on the rear (except trailers or motor vehicles originally manufactured without a bracket, device, or other means to display and secure a front license plate). Plates must be attached in a horizontal position at least 12 inches from the ground.
Wyoming is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). The IRP is a base state system for vehicle registration fees, allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
The IRP defines a fleet of apportionable vehicles as one or more commercial vehicles having a gross weight or registered gross weight in excess of 26,000 pounds, or having three or more axles, regardless of weight, or used in combination, when the weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds.
In addition, operators of vehicles from IRP states, which do not qualify as apportionable vehicles, may be proportionally registered at the option of the registrant.
Agency: Applications are made to respective County Treasurer in county of domicile, unless apportioning the vehicle and application is made to the Dept. of Transportation; see Regulatory Agencies for address(es).
Temporary Permit: If the applicant needs to use a newly acquired vehicle before credentials can be issued, a temporary apportionment authority may be issued upon request. No temporary apportionment authority will be granted to any carrier who is delinquent in filing any application, has past due billing notices, or has been issued a temporary apportionment authority for which a supplement has not yet been submitted. A temporary permit is valid for 30-days and no extra fee.
Hunter's Permit: Each jurisdiction shall provide a means of registration for owner-operators not operating as a lessor. Such registration shall be a restricted plate or permit issued for a minimum fee and for a registered gross weight not in excess of the empty weight of the vehicle. The temporary registration credentials issued by a member jurisdiction shall be honored as a valid registration in all IRP jurisdictions.
