Maine has adopted Sec. 390.15 of the Federal Regulations, which includes accident recordkeeping requirements.
Applicability
Section 390.15 applies to a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more, or a vehicle transporting hazardous materials which require placarding.
Notification
Accidents resulting in death, bodily injury or apparent property damage of $1,000 or more must be reported immediately by the quickest means of communication to the State Police, Municipal Police or County Sheriff having jurisdiction.
How to obtain accident reports
Procedure
A copy of an official accident report may be obtained by sending an online or a written request along with the required fee to the Traffic Division, Maine State Police. The request should include the operator’s name and date of birth, the date and location of the accident, and any other available information.
An online request may be made via the Maine State Police website: http://www.maine.gov/dps/msp/.
Fee
A fee of $10.00 is charged for each copy of an accident report.
