Federal regulations
New Jersey has adopted Part 391 of the Federal Regulations with the exception of Sec. 391.11(b)(1).
Applicability
Part 391 applies to an intrastate vehicle with a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, gross combination weight rating, or registered weight of 10,001 pounds or more, or a vehicle of any size transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
Age
Intrastate drivers who possess a valid New Jersey Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), and do not transport hazardous materials requiring placards or operate a vehicle displaying a hazardous material(s) placard, must be at least 18 years old. Otherwise, the 21-year age requirement applies.
Driver qualification file
A driver qualification file (Sec. 391.51) is required.
Operator’s license
The commercial driver’s license classifications are as follows:
Class | Description |
---|---|
Class A | Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 pounds. |
Class B | A single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or a vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds towing a vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less. Also includes a bus with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver. |
Class C | Any single vehicle less than 26,001 pounds GVWR, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR provided that the vehicle is used in the transportation of a placardable amount of hazardous materials; or the vehicle is designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver; or the vehicle is designed to transport eight to 15 passengers including the driver and is used for hire; or the vehicle is used to transport eight to 15 persons including the driver for hire on a daily basis to and from places of employment; or the vehicle is required to be registered as a school bus. |
