Federal regulations
Mississippi has adopted Part 391 of the Federal Regulations.
Applicability
Part 391 applies to commercial motor vehicles operated in intrastate commerce with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, or vehicles transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
Age
18 to obtain an intrastate Class A, B, or C commercial driver’s license. 21 to transport hazardous materials. 21 to obtain an interstate Class A, B, or C commercial driver’s license.
Driver qualification file
A driver qualification file (Sec. 391.51) is required.
Operator’s license
The license classes are as follows:
Class | Description |
---|---|
Class A | Any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. |
Class B | Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, and any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR. |
Class C | Any single vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds used in the transportation of hazardous materials required to be placarded or any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR, Part 73. Any single vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver. |
Class D | Any single vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds except vehicles included in Class C or vehicles which require a special endorsement unless the proper endorsement appears on the license. (Class D licenses are not commercial driver’s licenses.) |

2 | Restricted for use between the hours of 6:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M. |
3 | Outside rearview mirror. |
4 | Except Class A bus. |
5 | Automatic transmission. |
6 | Except Class A and Class B bus. |
7 | Bioptic Lens |
8 | Motorcycle only. |
9 | Company owned vehicle. |
A | Daylight driving. |
B | Custom equipment. |
C | 45 MPH. |
D | Re-examine before renewal. |
F | CDL intrastate only. |
G | Prosthetic aid. |
I | Intrastate only. |
K | Restricts the driver to vehicles not equipped with air brakes. |
R | Rehab only. |
T | Interlock device. |
U | Must be accompanied by farm service waiver card. |
