Georgia has adopted Part 391 of the Federal Regulations with modifications to the age requirement.
Applicability
Part 391 applies to any self-propelled or towed motor vehicle used on a highway in intrastate and interstate commerce when the vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more, or is of any size transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
Age
18 years old for intrastate drivers and 21 years old for interstate drivers.
Driver qualification file
A driver qualification file (Sec. 391.51) is required.
Operator’s license
Georgia has a driver license system which classifies drivers by the type of vehicle they are authorized to operate. A commercial driver’s license must be marked Commercial Driver’s License or “CDL”.
Class | Description |
---|---|
Class A | Any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. |
Class B | Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR. |
Class C (commercial) | Any single vehicle with a GVWR less than 26,001 pounds or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds. This classification shall apply to vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, and vehicles used in the transportation of hazardous materials which require the vehicles to be placarded. |
Class C (non-commercial) | Any single vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 26,000 pounds, any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds, any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR in excess of 10,000 pounds, provided that the combination of vehicles has a gross combined vehicle weight rating not in excess of 26,000 pounds, and any self-propelled or towed vehicle that is equipped to serve as temporary living quarters for recreational, camping, or travel purposes and is used solely as a family or personal conveyance. |
Class D | Provisional license applicable to non-commercial Class C vehicles. |
Class E | Any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the GVWR of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. A Class E license applies to agricultural, military, and firefighter/emergency vehicles. |
Class F | A single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds. A Class F license applies to agricultural, military, and firefighting/emergency vehicles. |
Class M | Motorcycle; motor driven cycles and three-wheeled motorcycles. |
Physical qualification
An intrastate driver who is physically disqualified due certain conditions including diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, or visual acuity issues may apply with the Department of Driver Services for a waiver or exemption.
Exception — The physical qualification requirements in Part 391, Subpart E do not apply to drivers of covered farm vehicles as defined in Section 1-390.1 of the Georgia Department of Public Safety Transportation Rulebook.
