Federal regulations
Arizona has adopted Part 391 of the Federal Regulations with the exception of Sec. 391.11(b)(1). The physical qualification requirements also contain special provisions.
Applicability
Part 391 applies to a motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicles which has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, and vehicles hauling hazardous materials in an amount required to be placarded.
Age
18 years of age, 21 years to haul reportable quantities of hazardous substances, hazardous wastes required to be manifested, or hazardous materials in an amount required to be placarded.
Driver qualification file
A driver qualification file (Sec. 391.51) is required. There is an exception to the physical qualification requirement. See Physical Qualification for details.
Operator’s license
The following classification is in effect:
Class | Description |
---|---|
Class A | Any combination of vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. |
Class B | Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR. |
Class C | Any single vehicle less than 26,001 pounds GVWR, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR. This group comprises vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver and vehicles used in the transportation of materials requiring placarding. |
Class D | Regular operator’s license. |
Physical qualification
The Arizona Department of Transportation may grant an intrastate waiver under specified conditions to an individual not meeting the vision requirements or with a limb defect or impairment.
