This standard presents a simple, readily recognized, and easily understood system of markings (commonly referred to as the "NFPA hazard diamond") that provides an immediate general sense of the hazards of a material and the severity of these hazards as they relate to emergency response.

Incorporation by reference
This standard has not been incorporated by reference (IBR) into the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). However, it could be used as an option for compliance with the OSHA hazard communication standard’s requirements for workplace labeling, found at 29 CFR 1910.1200(f)(6)(ii).
