This standard addresses fires that are small at origin and may be extinguished using portable fire extinguishers, which have a limited amount of extinguishing material. The owner or occupant of the property should identify fire hazards and develop an emergency action plan. The plan should cover the equipment and means for controlling the fire, as well as the responses of the occupants. NFPA strongly recommends that for any fire, the fire department be notified immediately.
