Summary of differences between federal and state regulations
The federal minimum wage provisions are contained in the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Many states also have minimum wage laws. In cases where an employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher of the two minimum wages.
Effective January 1, 2025, the minimum wage for Maine employers is $14.65 per hour ($7.33 for tipped employees).
Effective January 1, 2024, the minimum wage for Maine employees is $14.15 per hour ($7.08 for tipped employees).
Effective January 1, 2023, the minimum wage for Maine employees is $13.80 per hour ($6.90 for tipped employees).
If the highest federal minimum wage is increased in excess of the minimum wage in effect, the minimum wage is increased to the same amount, effective on the same date as the increase in the federal minimum wage, and will then increase in accordance to the schedule outlined above.
