State Info
The EPA has not had regulatory authority over medical waste since the Medical Waste Tracking Act of 1988 expired in 1991. Most states have since developed their own programs, resulting in significant differences for each state. A summary of this state’s requirements includes the following.
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality regulates medical waste (315 UAC 316) for:
- Health facilities that generate more than 200 pounds per month of infectious waste,
- Transporters that collect and transport more than 200 pounds of infectious waste in any one load,
- Facilities storing more than 200 pounds of infectious waste, and
- Facilities treating or disposing of infectious waste.
The regulations cover:
- 316-2 General operational requirements,
- 316-3 Storage and containment requirements,
- 316-4 Infectious waste transportation requirements, and
- 316-5 Infectious waste treatment and disposal requirements.
